Serious SAM missiles in the village of Woodsetts
Surprising discoveries driving around the countryside in Yorkshire.
A couple of years ago I wrote a blog about VILLAGE LIFE in the tri-county area around our little village which is just a couple of miles from the spot where southern Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire meet. When I re-posted it recently, I was unable to find the original picture of the SAM (surface-to-air-missile) I mentioned in the story.
I wrote: “Just to the north, we visit the area where Diane grew up. Driving down a lane, we come to a high brick wall and imposing gates marking a grand estate. Looming over the wall, stands a huge array of surface to air missiles in a launcher. We don’t know if the owner has raging paranoia or if it’s just an odd souvenir, but I think every village should have one.”
Some folks didn’t believe me. They thought I might have had one too many at the pub.
After a quick visit to the newly opened Butcher’s Arms in the village of Woodsetts, I decided to drive down the private lane and see if the missiles were still there. Sure enough, they still loom large at the front entrance of the very, very private estate. I hopped out of the car, waved at the security cameras and snapped the picture above.
Just thought you’d like to know that I don’t make these things up!

The folks who run the restored Chesterfield Canal are busily fundraising and I chip in a fiver to buy a brick for a new lock at their mobile booth in the Saturday market in Worksop. They tell me they’re running canal trips with a Santa theme throughout November.Check the link above for details.
